Vacation to Miami and Coping with MDDS

My husband and I love vacations but really, is there anyone who doesn’t? Throughout the year, my husband Danny and I go on mini road trip vacations but come around fall, when it is off-season, right around our anniversary and no kids to accommodate, we fly somewhere for a nice vacation. This year, Danny and I just came back from Miami Florida and really enjoyed this vacation since we didn’t fly anywhere for 3 years! We didn’t ride an airplane for 3 years before this one because I developed MDDS. MDDS stands for Mal de debarquement syndrome and it is a rare and little understood disorder of the body’s balance system (vestibular system) and refers to the rocking sensation and/or sense of imbalance that persists for an excessive length of time after an ocean cruise, plane flight or other motion experience.

I never had it my entire life but MDDS started as soon as I landed from the airplane ride back from Las Vegas 3 years ago. I was completely fine to the trip there but as soon as I landed back home, I had severe constant rocking and swaying motion feeling. I had a very hard time balancing, focusing, standing or even keeping my eyes opened. I thought it’ll go away soon but the worst nightmare continued for 3 1/2 weeks straight and during that time, I couldn’t function at all. I panicked and researched all over the internet and tried to take all sorts of over-the-counter medicine. I purposefully did not seek a doctor reading how rare this is and figured most doctors won’t have a clue. Plus, last thing I wanted to do was go to the doctor since just 8 months prior to the Vegas trip, I had 3 strings of major surgeries and recoveries. Thankfully, I also had my brother-in-law to consult since he is an ENT doctor. But, I still researched like crazy as I do with everything and found out the over-the-counter medicine meclizine works the best. I took meclizine for 3 days and I finally felt better after 3 1/2 weeks of motion sickness on land (aka land sickness and/or MDDS).

So how did I go on this trip and how do I feel now? Well, I have researched and read to take meclizine 2 hours before the plane ride and I did just that along with lots of prayers from friends and family. I mustered up all the little courage I had and decided it’s time to fly again after 3 years. Guess what? I felt completely fine when I arrived in Miami and felt immediate relief of anxiety as you could imagine! However, when I landed back home, I felt okay but super exhausted and slowly but surely, the next day (which was yesterday) I felt slight swaying and rocking motion. I took meclizine right away to make sure it doesn’t get worse. As we speak, the feeling is still there but in no way like the last time so I feel like it’ll go away very soon. I am planning to take another meclizine tonight and pray it’ll completely go away by tomorrow.

I speculate that I got MDDS because I flew too early after a major surgery and just triggered it but, who really knows why. But, I am going to stop researching or asking why it happened to me. I’m just thankful this time wasn’t as severe as last time and I feel hopeful because of it. I am also very proud of myself to overcome the fear and fly anyways. I’m going to continue to fly and go on vacations and live my life no matter what. I will though continue to pray I’ll overcome MDDS completely very soon. So for those of you who may suffer from MDDS, know that you are not alone and don’t be scared or anxious! It’ll come but it’ll go away soon enough! Don’t let it rob you of your life!

Miami was amazing! It was our first time there and our hotel was right on South Beach but also explored downtown Miami as well. We really enjoyed it. We stayed there exactly a week and there were a lot to do but was very relaxing as well. We really loved the culture, food and vibrant vibe and I highly recommend a trip to Miami if you haven’t been there.

For my outfits, I packed a good mix. I brought comfy chic clothes with sneakers for walking around, stylish clothes for nights out, dressy clothes for classy dinners, and of course, bikinis for the beach and pool! I also kept in mind to go bright in terms of colors or go cool white for Miami.

Some places we visited in Miami and I recommend are Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Bayside Marketplace, Lincoln Road, Frost Museum of Science, Art Deco District, Ocean Drive, Bal Harbour Beach, Museum of Contemporary Art, Calle Ocho, South Beach and Wynwood Walls. I included pictures of some of the fantastic wall arts you can see in Wynwood Walls. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

Hi I’m going thru th same thing it’s been a month since I traveled on a plane to Fla and I think I have MDDS. I’m 36. Do you think it will go away? I think the symptoms are subsiding a little. Did your symptoms slowly get better?
